"Echoing the Word From the Centre"
Echoing the Word From the Centre is the Introductory Catechist Formation Process sponsored by the Office
of Faith Formation of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
It has been designed and written by Sr. Gretchen Hailer, RSHM in consultation with the Office of Faith Formation
Staff and the Catechetical Leaders Executive Board.
It has also been designed in response to the diocesan-wide consultation with Pastoral, catechetical and educational
leaders following publication of The Catechist in the Third Millennium: Call, Mission and Formation published by the
New York State Roman Catholic Bishops in 1998.
Echoing the Word from the Centre like all good catechist formation will be an ongoing and never ending process.
In September 2002, the office of Faith Formation introduced the process in the form of a working document. It will
continue to be reviewed by Catechetical Leaders and Catechists during an introductory and transitional period before
being finalized.
Echoing the Word from the Centre is consistent with the principles and Content of the General Directory of
Catechesis and The Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is being supplemented and finalized with the publication of
the National Directory for Catechesis and the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults.
Echoing the Word from the Centre is a survival course for new catechists and a refresher course in the basic
principles and techniques of Catechetical Process for veteran Catechists and Catechetical Leaders.
Echoing the Word from the Centre is a process of 2-hour sessions which will provide an introductory survey of the
topics identified for theological formation and catechetical methodology by the Catholic bishops of New York State in the
Catechist of the Third Millennium. The process is ideally designed to provide 20 clock hours of formation over a
two year period. However, it can be completed in one year or extended for a longer period time based on parish
schedules and resources. Sessions are designed so that they can be scheduled interchangeably and need not
necessarily follow a preset sequence.
Echoing the Word from the Centre is designed to be offered in each parish of the diocese. However, it can also be
offered in deanery or vicariate locations as needs and resources warrant.
Echoing the Word from the Centre is a mutual learning experience facilitated by Catechetical Leaders and veteran
Catechists who have completed the facilitator training process.
